AIIMS Replaces Term ‘Paramedical’ with ‘Allied and Healthcare’ Following NCAHP Directive
AIIMS

The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, has officially adopted the term “Allied and Healthcare” in place of “Paramedical” in all forms of communication verbal, written, and electronic. This significant change follows a directive from the National Commission for Allied and Healthcare Professions (NCAHP) under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India.

The directive, conveyed through letter No. Z/103/2024-AHS-DOHFW, FTS-8309547 dated July 1, 2025, mandates the use of the term “Allied and Healthcare” as defined under Section 2(b), (c), (d), (e), and (j) of the NCAHP Act, 2021, replacing the term “Paramedical” in all institutional contexts.

In response, the Academic Section of AIIMS issued an office memorandum (No. F.5-1/Acad.2025/Misc/P.M.) on July 12, 2025, directing all concerned departments and authorities at AIIMS to implement the change with immediate effect. The memorandum stresses the use of the new terminology in all relevant communications and documentation.

The circular was approved by Prof. Girija Prasad Rath, Registrar of AIIMS, and distributed to key departments including Ophthalmic Sciences, Dental Education & Research, Radiodiagnosis and Interventional Radiology, and Anesthesia, Pain Medicine & Critical Care. It was also shared with all Heads of Departments (HODs), Chiefs of Centers, and administrative offices for compliance.

This move is seen as a major step towards standardizing healthcare terminology across India and aligning it with the statutory language of the NCAHP Act, 2021, aimed at elevating the recognition and scope of allied health professionals.
