The NMC's decision to withdraw the guidelines to reduce the MBBS passing marks to 40% has been widely celebrated

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has withdrawn its decision to reduce the MBBS passing marks to 40%. The NMC said that the reduction in cut-off was “not possible”. The commission added that the decision was made after thorough consideration of the subject matter.

The NMC's decision to reduce the passing marks was made to draw more focus on practical knowledge of the course. The revised guidelines of Competency Based Medical Education Regulation 2023 (CBME 2023) stated that the pass percentage was reduced to 40% for MBBS subjects having two papers.

The NMC's decision to withdraw the guidelines to reduce the MBBS passing marks to 40% has been widely celebrated. However, it also highlights the need for further improvements in medical education. The high failure rates that prompted the proposed change in the first place indicate that many students are struggling with the current curriculum.
